New Regulation For Reef Fishers
The Caribbean Fishery Management Council (CFMC) and NOAA Fisheries have proposed a new rule (Amendment 2) that requires all fishers in federal waters around Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, John, St. Croix to have a descending device on board when fishing for reef fish.
What's a Descending Device?
A defending device helps fish suffering from barotrauma (injury caused by rapid pressure changes when reeled up from deep water) return safely to their original depth so they can survive. It uses weights and a line to lower the fish back down.
Why This Matters
When fish float on the surface after being released, they often die or get eaten. Using a descending device helps increase fish survival rates and protect reef fish populations for the future.
Which Fish Are Affected?
This applies to a large grouper of reef fish like: Snappers, Groupers, Parrot Fish, Surgeon Fish, Trigger Fish, Wrasses, Grunts, Jacks, and more. These are specific to Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix.
Where to Get a Device
You can buy a device at a fishing supply store or make your own using common material.
